Create Your Own Sacred Space

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the durm and strang, the storm and stress, of moving in and out of lockdowns. We know the drill now, of working at home, supporting our kid’s schooling and managing the isolation from our friends. It doesn’t get easier, but it is familiar. And while we cant change our external circumstances, we can find ways to support ourselves with kindness and care. To take some time away from the news cycle to turn within and reflect on what is truly important. One way we can do this is by carving out a little area to create a sacred space. A space where you can come home to yourself.

Your sacred space is where you can find yourself over and over again. Joseph Campbell

The power of Ritual: By creating and performing daily rituals for ourselves, we move freely into our own inner landscape. Rituals connect us back to our own true nature. We take charge of marking and honouring the transitions and special moments in our lives, making sense of them. They serve as a bridge between our inner and outer worlds. They serve to ground us in both our five senses and the present moment.

Rituals are tools that give us the freedom to take responsibility for the direction and purpose of our lives. We can then seize and shape this freedom—consciously, deliberately, and joyfully.

A Space for just for you: Create a place of beauty and quiet where you can you pause, unplug, and reflect. Train your family to let you have these moments of solitude. (Tell them you’ll be a better parent, lover, friend.)

Here’s some ideas on how to set up your space:

  1. Choose a small location that is away from a lot of activity such as a corner of a bedroom or spare room.

  2. In your chosen space, place a small low table to hold items that are special to you. If you don’t have one, anything will do, even an old wooden crate.

  3. Get something comfortable to sit on like a meditation cushion or pillow. The closer you are to the floor, the more grounded you will feel.

  4. Place items that you find beautiful on your table such as things you collected on a walk in nature, inspirational quotes, photographs, crystals, or fresh flowers. These items should speak to your soul in a way that is both nurturing and inspiring.

  5. Light a candle to remind you of your own inner light.

  6. If you meditate, this is the perfect place to practice. If you like to write, bring your journal. If you play music, bring your guitar.

  7. If you’d like some music to set the scene, try Garth Stevenson, Deva Premal, Katie Underwood, Sacred Earth, Jai Jageesh, Gurumul, for mellow sounds.

  8. Use this space daily to pause, soften and connect.

You’ll notice that with daily practice, you’ll feel calmer, more connected and better equipped to surf the waves of life.
