Beyond the Familiar: Exploring the Lesser-Known Shapes of Yin
If you’ve been practising Yin Yoga for a while, you’re probably familiar with the foundational shapes of the practice: finding your edge, settling into a pose, getting comfortable and allowing yourself to become still.
But what happens when we move beyond the poses we know so well?
In this workshop, we’ll step outside the familiar and explore some of the lesser-known and more intriguing shapes of Yin Yoga, including the Giraffe, Water Dragon and Crossed-Arm Sphinx. These are poses you may not have encountered before, and they offer a wonderful opportunity to explore your body, your edges and your experience of Yin from a fresh perspective.
The approach draws on the work of Paul and Suzee Grilley, whose functional approach to Yin Yoga recognises that every body is different. Rather than trying to make our bodies conform to a particular shape, we’ll be curious about the function of each pose: What are we trying to access, and how does it feel in your body?
We’ll play with different variations, explore creative use of props and investigate how these less familiar shapes might open up new possibilities in your practice.
For teachers, this is also a chance to expand your Yin vocabulary and discover new possibilities for sequencing, variation and individualising your classes.
What we’ll explore
Lesser-known and more unusual Yin Yoga poses
The Grilleys’ functional approach: how does it feel rather than how does it look?

Fresh ideas to expand and deepen your personal Yin practice
Inspiration and new possibilities for teachers when creating Yin sequences

About Vickie Liew
Vickie is a lifelong student of yoga and brings a depth of experience, curiosity and genuine love for the practice to her teaching. Over the years, she has immersed herself in a range of Yin Yoga and meditation trainings, continually exploring the practice both on and off the mat.
She is particularly drawn to the quiet, introspective nature of Yin and the space it creates to slow down, listen and reconnect with ourselves.
“I love Yin because it invites us to stop doing and start listening. It’s a chance to slow down, get curious about what’s happening within, and simply be.”
Alongside yoga, Vickie is a dedicated Qigong practitioner, bringing her interest in energy, breath and embodied movement into her practice and teaching.
Warm, thoughtful and deeply committed to her own ongoing learning, Vickie loves sharing practices that help people feel more at home in their bodies, cultivate stillness and discover something new about themselves.
